Kinase Classification: CMGC Group

The CMGC group (named after the initials of some members) includes key kinases: the MAPK growth- and stress-response kinases, the cell cycle CDK (cyclin dependent kinases) and kinases involved in splicing and metabolic control.

Evolution

This is an ancient group, with several families found in most or all eukaryotes.

Families

There are 9 highly-conserved CMGC families:

CDK: Cyclin Dependent Kinases

CDKL: CDK-like Kinases

CK2: Cell Kinase 2 (Casein Kinase 2)

CLK

DYRK

GSK: Glycogen Synthase Kinase

MAPK: Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase

These are the final kinases in the MAPK cascade that couples extracellular signals including growth factors and stress signals to transcriptional and other responses. The Erk subfamily is growth-factor responsive and universal, with the stress responsive p38 and Jnk subfamilies mediate stress responses. Erk7 and nemo are additional specialized subfamilies that are less well studied.

RCK

SRPK: SR-rich protein kinase
