I have led a research group since 1998 that aims to provide a mechanistic understanding of the cyclin-dependent protein kinase (CDK) family primarily through taking structural, biochemical and biophysical approaches complemented by cell-based studies. My PhD training completed at the Ontario Cancer Institute, Toronto was in the field of multidrug resistance and when my interest in cancer biology was first kindled. I moved to the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics, Oxford for my post-doctoral studies to train in X-ray crystallography and cell cycle control, becoming a Lecturer in 1998. I moved to Newcastle University in 2011. As a member of the CRUK Drug Discovery Group at Newcastle University I work closely with medicinal chemistry and cell biology colleagues across the wider CRUK network to help coordinate structural biology capability for drug discovery.
