Kinase Classification: Group Atypical: Family MAPK: Subfamily ERK1

ERK1 (Extracellular signal Regulated Kinase) transduces growth signals downstream of receptor tyrosine kinases, ras, and raf in human cells, and the pheromone response pathway (KSS1/FUS3) in yeast. The subfamily is found in virtually all eukaryotes. The two vertebrate genes, ERK1 and ERK2 have very similar functions, and their upstream kinases are MEK1 and MEK2 (MAP2K1 and MAP2K2).
