Kinase Classification: Group CAMK: Family MAPKAPK: Subfamily MK5

MK5 includes MAPKAPK5/PRAK in mammals, and single orthologs in metazoans, though it is absent from Drosophila and C. elegans, where its functions may be replaced by the related MK2 subfamily.

Like other MAPKAPK family members, MK5 is phosphorylated by MAPK (Erk or p38). It in turn regulates stress responses by phosphorylation of small heat shock protein HSP27 (as does MAPKAPK2).
