Class 3 Phosphatidyl Inositol Kinases

Evolution

A single PI3K3 is found in most or all eukaryotes [1]. The human gene is PIK3C3 and the yeast is Vps34. Its regulatory partner, Vps15, is also pan-eukaryotic.

Domain Structure

PI3K3 have a N-terminal C2 domain followed by PI3Ka (accessory domain), and then a PKL kinase domain.

Functions

PI3K3 has a conserved role in membrane trafficking and autophagy, in yeast and mammals, as well as endocytosis and insulin signaling in mammals.
