Kinase Glossary: N171

N171 is a highly conserved residue in ePK and most PKL kinases. It co-ordinates the second Mg++ ion used during catalysis. Within ePKs it is almost completely conserved, but is changed to a serine in PAKB kinases and in the MTRK family of PKL kinases. The number 171 is based on the position of this residue in the first PKA kinase crystal, 1ATP [1].
